What is a Shisha?

Components of a Shisha:
A Shisha is also know as waterpipe, narghile, arghila, qalyān, hookah a water pipe used in smoking. It originated in India.

The Bowl :

It is a container made up of coconut, clay or marble to hold the coal and tobacco. The coal is lit and placed on the tobacco to burn.

The Hose:

It is the tube which allows the smoke to be inhaled, from a mouthpiece fitted at its one end.

The body and the gasket:

The body of the shisha is a tube that has its one end fitted with the bowl, above. Its middle section passes through a gasket and is sealed there. The body tube’s other end is submerged up to few centimeters in the water in a jar, below. There are two holes which come out from the space above the water through the gasket to be use as the hose’s one end ( the other end being the mouthpiece).

The water jar:

It is the lower half of the hookah supporting the whole structure. The Smoke passes through the body and exits from the body tube where it bubbles through the water. This cools and humidifies the smoke.

How the Shisha works?

  • When one inhales via the hose, there is change in pressure in the jar, below.
  • As a result, air is sucked into the bowl containing the charcoal and the tobacco, above.
  • The charcoal heats the air.
  • This heated air in turn evaporates (not burns) the tobacco, producing smoke.
  • This smoke passes through the body tube and exits into the water in the jar, below.
  • The heated air bubbles up through the water, losing its heat.
  • It now, fills the top part of the jar, to which the hose is attached.
  • There is again change in pressure in the jar when a smoker inhales from the hose, sucking air through the charcoal, continuing the process.
